Outcomes

Results of the sub-project include papers in prestigious journals and active participation in conferences, theoretical background documents for international standardisation, development of handbook, seminar and lectures for life-long education of the target users, software products and sub-project web sites.

Handbook on STRUCTURAL ASSESSMENT OF INDUSTRIAL HERITAGE BUILDINGS – handbook.pdf
The Handbook is focused on the complex methodology for structural assessment of industrial heritage buildings. The main topics include basis of assessment, actions, material and geometric properties, deterioration models, reliability analysis, and decision on construction interventions. In addition theoretical procedures are supplemented by several case studies provided in Annex A. Annex B describes basic statistical concepts and techniques. The Handbook is written in a user-friendly way employing only basic mathematical tools. A wide range of potential users of the Handbook includes practising engineers, designers, technicians, experts of public authorities and students.

Background material for ISO

Note for ISO TC98/SC2/WG6 discusses significance of the industrial heritage structures, motivation for use of probabilistic methods in the assessment of heritage structures and aspects of decision-making based on cost-benefit optimisation. The note is concluded by recommendations for further development of Annex I of ISO 13822 for the assessment of heritage structures.

General methodology for probabilistic assessment of industrial heritage structures

The document provides the general methodology for the probabilistic assessment of industrial heritage structures such as factories, warehouses, power plants and other industrial buildings. At present considerable effort is aimed at re-use of these structures in order to preserve their cultural and heritage value and avoid wasting energy. The industrial heritage structures usually do not fulfil requirements of present standards. Decisions about adequate construction interventions should be based on the complex reliability assessment considering actual material properties and environmental influences. In the document probabilistic procedure allowing consideration of new information on structural conditions obtained by inspections and tests is proposed. A general approach to specification of target reliability levels is suggested using principles of total cost optimisation. general_methodology.pdf

Background material for the EACH project

The background material for the EACH project emphasises significance of the industrial heritage structures and advantages of use of probabilistic methods in the assessment of heritage structures. The suggestions have been incorporated into the 2nd Report (January 2011) of the EACH project. EACH.pdf
EACH project is European initiative attempting to show how crucial may prove the contribution of scientists and technologists saving our common Patrimony and saving public money often wasted for erroneous interventions. www.eachproject.eu
